Making Waves: A Comparative Analysis of Shear Wave Velocity Measurements

Shear wave velocity (Vs) is a key geotechnical parameter for foundation design, seismic site classification, and liquefaction assessment. This presentation compares Vs measurements from surface methods, borehole testing (downhole and PS suspension logging), and seismic CPT (sCPT). Topics include method selection, true-time vs. pseudo-time interpretation, and QA/QC practices. Applications include shear modulus estimation, site classification, liquefaction evaluation, soil saturation assessment, and identification of unusual soils using CPT and Soil Behavior Type (SBT) data.
