SUMMARY:GI - September Dinner Meeting
DESCRIPTION:GI – September Dinner Meeting with Kelly Cabal – Director of ConeTec\nMaking Waves: A Comparative Analysis of Shear Wave Velocity Measurements\nShear wave velocity (Vs) is a key geotechnical parameter for foundation design\, seismic site classification\, and liquefaction assessment. This presentation compares Vs measurements from surface methods\, borehole testing (downhole and PS suspension logging)\, and seismic CPT (sCPT). Topics include method selection\, true-time vs. pseudo-time interpretation\, and QA/QC practices. Applications include shear modulus estimation\, site classification\, liquefaction evaluation\, soil saturation assessment\, and identification of unusual soils using CPT and Soil Behavior Type (SBT) data. \nCost: \n\n$70 General (Contractor\, Consultant with reservation)\n$55 Education/Government Employees (with reservation)\n$25 Students (with reservation) (if paying with check\, make checks payable to ASCE IL Geo-Institute)\n\nParking: Parking is located south of the 311 building – $13.00 after 5:00PM \n  \nRegister Here \n  \n

SUMMARY:GI October Dinner Meeting - Multi-tiered Evaluation of Earthquake-Induced Settlements: Application to Case Studies from the 2023 Türkiye Earthquake Sequence
DESCRIPTION:Join us with Professor Renmin Pretell and Dr. Ozgun Numanoglu as their presentation will demonstrate a multi-tiered framework to assess earthquake-induced settlements\, ranging from empirical liquefaction methods (Tiers 1-2) to advanced numerical simulations (Tiers 3-4). Applied to three sites affected by the 2023 M7.81 Pazarcık Earthquake\, the framework shows that conventional free-field methods generally overestimate post-shaking reconsolidation settlements. Advanced partially drained and 3D soil-structure interaction analyses more accurately reproduced measured settlements and identified the governing settlement mechanisms. \n  \nRegister Here!
